Help for Step 4 - How far from your home?
In section 4 we want to know how far away from home you were when you met each contact. If you meet the same person in different places you should cross all boxes that apply. We would like you to estimate how far you were from your home (your permanent residence) when you met each contact.
If you met someone travelling, try to estimate how far from home you were when the contact began.
Four options are available:
Less than 2 miles or at home: Please cross this box for all contacts that happened at your home or within about 2 miles (3km) of your home.
3 to 10 miles: Cross this box if you met this contact within 3 to 10 miles (4 to 16 km) of your home.
11 to 50 miles: For any contact that happened within 11 to 50 miles (17 to 80 km) of your home tick this box.
51 miles or more: For any contacts that occurred over 50 miles (80 km) from your home please cross this box.
Knowing the distance your were from home when a contact happened allows us to predict the speed with which an infection can spread across the country. If most contacts happen close to home then we would predict a slowly expanding wave of infection; if many contacts happen at a distance then the infection will quickly spread to all regions.
Example
You met Joe at work (3 miles from home) and at the cinema (12 miles from home): cross both '3 to 10 miles' and '11 to 50 miles'
Example
You were away from home (150 miles away) at a business meeting all week: all your contacts will be '51 miles or more'
